Halo Campaign Evolved Skulls and Collectibles
Repeated official guidance states that Halo Campaign Evolved contains 39 hidden Skulls spread across the campaign at three per mission. Every one of the 13 missions also holds a single Terminal, giving players a fixed collectible target on each level. The visible official collectibles article nonetheless lists 42 Skull names, so a reconciled complete list and the exact in-mission locations both remain To be confirmed.
How many Skulls are there?
Four official Halo Support guides repeat the same headline: Halo Campaign Evolved hides 39 Skulls across the campaign. The same guides state that each of the 13 missions contains exactly three hidden Skulls, which multiplies cleanly to 39. That per-mission rule is the only verified Skull-to-content mapping, because no source assigns individual Skull names to specific missions.

Halo Support also ties two collectible achievement thresholds to that same 39 figure, naming 22 hidden Skulls and all 39 hidden Skulls as unlock milestones. Those thresholds reinforce 39 as the operational official total for player-facing progression. They do not, however, resolve the separate naming mismatch that appears elsewhere in the same article.
How Skull unlocks work
Halo Support defines one explicit unlock trigger for the randomized replay layer. Collecting any three hidden Skulls automatically unlocks three new Skulls — Adaptation, Armistice, and Reload — and simultaneously unlocks Campaign Remix mode. The choice of which three Skulls you collect does not matter, because the trigger is purely a count of three found anywhere in the campaign. Once unlocked, those three Skulls and Remix mode stay available for solo or co-op play.
It is important to separate the hidden Skulls you find in missions from the three Skulls that the unlock grants. Adaptation, Armistice, and Reload are not picked up in the world; they activate as permanent modifiers once the three-found threshold is met. The same threshold is also what opens the dedicated Campaign Remix playlist. Beyond this rule, Halo Support does not document difficulty requirements or solo and co-op limits for individual hidden Skulls.
Campaign Remix rules
Campaign Remix is the mode that uses the unlocked Skull set to randomize later campaign runs. Three Skulls become permanently active the moment Remix unlocks: Adaptation randomizes the enemy factions present in encounters, Reload randomizes pre-placed weapons, and Armistice makes enemy factions ignore each other and focus on the player. Together those three Skulls deliver the randomized enemies, weapons, and altered enemy behavior that Halo Waypoint advertises for the mode. They cannot be turned off inside Remix, because they define the mode itself.
| Skull | Official effect |
|---|---|
| Adaptation | Randomizes the enemy factions present in encounters |
| Reload | Randomizes pre-placed weapons |
| Armistice | Enemy factions ignore each other and focus on the player |
On top of the three permanent Skulls, a feature called Remix Selection adds three to six additional random Skulls drawn from the unlocked collection. Remix Selection can also apply one of two visual modifiers, either Spore Visibility or forced Night Vision. The selection is randomized each run, so two Remix playthroughs of the same mission can feel meaningfully different. Halo Support presents these as the full Remix rule set and lists no optional toggles for the three mandatory Skulls.

LASO uses a defined 17-Skull set
LASO, the Legendary All Skulls On difficulty, follows a fixed Skull recipe rather than a free-form selection. Halo Support states that LASO unlocks after the player finds its 17 required Skulls, and that all 17 stay active for the entire playthrough. Difficulty modifier presets also prevent the MYTHIC achievement or trophy from unlocking during a LASO run. The official effect summary for each Skull in that set is reproduced below.
| # | Skull | Official effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Iron | Solo death restarts the mission; co-op death returns to the last checkpoint |
| 2 | Black Eye | Shields recharge only after meleeing an enemy |
| 3 | Fog | Disables the Motion Tracker |
| 4 | Famine | Enemy-dropped weapons contain half ammunition |
| 5 | Thunderstorm | Upgrades most enemy ranks |
| 6 | Mythic | Enemies have increased health |
| 7 | Grunt Birthday Party | Grunt headshots trigger a celebration |
| 8 | IWHBYD | Rare dialogue becomes more common |
| 9 | Boom | Doubles explosion radius |
| 10 | Eye Patch | Disables weapon auto-aim |
| 11 | Grunt Funeral | Grunts die in a plasma blaze |
| 12 | Malfunction | A random HUD element disappears after respawn |
| 13 | That's just… Wrong | Enemies have increased awareness |
| 14 | Speed Limit | Disables sprint |
| 15 | Pop | Shooting a Flood weak point causes an explosion |
| 16 | Temperamental | Allies retaliate more quickly after friendly kills |
| 17 | Johnny Ammo Seed | Reloading discards the ammunition left in the magazine |
The 17-Skull recipe mixes classic franchise Skulls such as Iron, Black Eye, Fog, Famine, and Mythic with newer entries such as Johnny Ammo Seed, Temperamental, and Pop. Several names recur from the hidden-Skull pool, while others are documented only inside the LASO set. Because the recipe is fixed, players cannot swap a Skull out for an easier alternative.

Terminals and mission collectibles
Skulls are only one half of the per-mission collectible set. Halo Support states that every one of the 13 missions contains a single Terminal, giving each level a fixed two-part collectible target of three hidden Skulls plus one Terminal. The Terminal names are mapped per mission in the mission reference, but their exact in-level positions are not documented in the official guides. The same research repository flags Skull-to-mission assignments and exact locations as missing information.
The verified collectible structure is therefore consistent and simple to plan around. Each mission yields three hidden Skulls and one Terminal, the full hidden-Skull pool is officially 39, and the full Terminal pool is officially 13. Achievement thresholds at 22 and 39 hidden Skulls give players an intermediate and a completionist goal, and the achievement guide lists every Skull-tied unlock Steam publishes. Everything beyond those structural facts, including individual Skull identities, Terminal locations, and difficulty-gated access, remains unverified.
The 39-versus-42 conflict
The same official Collectibles article creates an unresolved internal conflict. Four Halo Support guides repeat the 39 hidden-Skull total, yet the visible Skull section of that article lists 42 individual Skull names. That leaves three names unaccounted for against the stated total, and Halo Support has not explained the discrepancy. This guide therefore uses 39 as the operational total while declining to publish the 42-name list as a reconciled database.
The research repository preserves the full 42-name sequence in its source index rather than on this page, so the discrepancy stays visible without being promoted into a finished guide. The conflict is also logged in the repository's conflicts register as an open item rather than a resolved one. No community or official source has yet reconciled the two figures. Until one does, this guide reports both numbers side by side and takes no position on which three names are surplus.

Locations and assignments remain unverified
Beyond the per-mission count of three, no official source documents where each hidden Skull sits inside its level. The research repository explicitly lists Skull-to-mission assignments, exact locations, difficulty requirements, and solo or co-op limitations as missing information. Community wikis describe classic Halo: Combat Evolved Skull placements, but those entries are not verified for Campaign Evolved's rebuilt missions. This page therefore offers no individual location guidance.
Where this guide lacks a verified detail, it says so directly rather than guessing. The specific identities of the three hidden Skulls in any given mission are To be confirmed. The exact pickup positions for those Skulls and for the 13 Terminals are To be confirmed. The difficulty and solo or co-op rules that govern each hidden Skull outside the documented LASO and Remix behavior are likewise To be confirmed.
